The Library and Works on Paper Collection of the Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst in Vienna provides information on all aspects of the applied arts. The Library comprises literature from the 16th century until today – manuscripts, incunabula, printed books, with a total of more than 200,00 volumes. Currently the focus is on building up a collection of artists’ books and new media and on strengthening the collections on contemporary architecture, art and design.

Scope of the collection
The international holdings comprise:
200,000 volumes on art, design, applied arts, new media, contemporary art, museum studies, art theory, art history, esthetics, Asia, restauration and conservation, book art from the 19th century to the present.
40,000 exhibition catalogues from the 19th century to the present
ca. 3,700 periodical titles from the 19th century to the present
30,000 international auction catalogs from the 19th century to the present
Special collections of rare books, architectural treatises, manuscripts from the 16th to the 21st century, artists’ books from the 19th to the 21st century, artists’ bequests, early travel literature, colored japanese woodcuts
400,000 works on paper (drawings, prints, posters, photographies)
Archival collections
The MAK Library and Works on Paper Collection is administrating the most ancient file archive on the applied arts (since 1863)
Searchable holdings (1/2010):
60.000 bibliographical records (publications acquired since 1994 and records converted since then)
The periodical titles and 140,000 records concerning acquisitions from 1863 to 1994 are only online at http://www.mak.at/bibliothek.
Important parts of the Works on Paper Collection comprising more than 400,000 sheets are online at www.sammlungen.MAK.at.

The library is a reference library participating in interlibrary loan and providing scans. Internet access is free.
